Guests unveiled a research book titled 'Traffic Congestion in Dhaka City and Governance Perspective' at BRAC Center Inn yesterday. -Mostafizur Rahman Random parking here and there, grabbing the spaces of roads by private transports and violation of traffic rule are the main reasons behind the terrible traffic congestion. Besides, Dhaka's road network has not been properly planned that reflects short-term needs.
The long-term requirements have not been sufficiently considered here. Excessive use of car, lack of parking lot, issuing of fake license, lack of co-ordination among government organizations and other relevant organizations are gradually arising the traffic congestion in the city, a recent research says.
The research has further said taking alternative measures is the main way to relief from the suffering and save the city from traffic congestion. If the necessary steps with long-term planning are not taken immediately to resolve the crisis, the issue will take serious turn within a short time.
The research book titled 'Traffic Congestion in Dhaka City and Governance Perspective' was launched amid a function in the auditorium of BRAC Centre at Mohakhali in the capital yesterday. The function was arranged by BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD), BRAC University, with Dr Sultan Hafeez Rahman, Executive Director of BIGD, in the chair.
Professor Nazrul Islam, Chairman of Centre for Urban Studies (CUS) attended the program as the chief guest, while Professor Syed Saad Andaleeb, Vice Chancellor of BRAC University, was special guest. Among others Naim Ahmed, Former Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), and Dr Shanawaz Hossain, Research Fellow of BIGD, spoke on the occasion.
At the program, the cover of the research book was unveiled and its copies were distributed among the attendants including journalists. Speakers at the function focused on different positive and negative sides of the study and expressed their impressions.
The study has brought out different findings on traffic congestions in and around the capital city and the role of six main relevant government organizations--DMP, DNCC, DSCC, BRTA, DTCA and RAJUK.
It has also recommended some practices that the number of private cars and motorcycles should be reduced to make the traffic management dynamic.
The entrepreneurs should expand their investment to operate highly capable and standard quality of transports on the roads to make the traffic movements smooth. Besides, expansion of manpower in the government organizations involved with traffic controlling should be expanded to look after the entire traffic situation in the city.
