Govt to build 1,130 megawatt power plants in Khulna

The government has taken initiatives to construct two power plants to generate 1,130 megawatt electricity on the bank of river Bhairab at Khalishpur industrial belt in the city. Capacitating 800MW electricity production these power stations would be set up inside Khulna News Print Mills and other 330MW electricity production power station would set up in Goalpara Power House area under the supervision of Bangladesh Power Development Board, sources said.

Earlier, ECNEC has Okayed the projects for constructing dual-fuel combined cycle power plant in Khulna at a cost of Taka 3,254 crore. Of the amount, China will finance Taka 2,014 crore in the project, while the remaining Taka 1,240 crore will come from the PDB. On November 17 in 2016, an agreement was signed between Harbin and Etarney China Joint Venture and PDB to construct the power stations in Khulna. Construction works of the power plants targeted to produce electricity by processing gas will be started from February this year.

According to sources, the power stations, supposed to facilitate 357 MW of electricity using gas will take 540 days for gas turbine and 900 days for gas and steam run combined cycle power plant while it will produce 335 MW of electricity using diesel. Reazaul Karim, manager (operation) of PDB Khulna Zone said, China engineers who visited several times in the project areas would provide with technical assistance.
