Jahangirnagar University (JU), the land of life, nature and culture, turns 47 today. A two-day-long program has been chalked out for celebrating the founding anniversary. On 20 August in 1970, the then Pakistan government decided to establish 'Jahangirnagar Muslim University' on 697.56 acres of land, 32 kilometers away from Dhaka. Rear Admiral SM Ahsan inaugurated the university on 12 January, 1971. After the independence at the 1st parliament session of Bangladesh, government excluded the word 'Muslim' and named it 'Jahangirnagar University'.
The institution is well known as the only fully residential university in the country. It has 12 halls in total while two more are undergoing construction. Moreover, the university reserves half of its seats for girls prioritizing girls' higher education.
The 2-day program will begin today by hoisting the national and university flags. A puppet show and a cultural program will be held at the Muktamancha at 3:00pm. Jahangirnagar University Alumni Association will host the 'Alumni Day' tomorrow. Students of the second batch will be rewarded this year.
