Mizanur Rahman
A Bangladeshi gas station worker has been shot dead during a robbery in Los Angeles. The incident took place at a Chevron Gas Station at the intersection of Vermont St and Los Feliz, near the city's 'Little Bangladesh' around 3:00am local time on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Mizanur Rahman, who hails from the Chowdhury neighborhood of Shibganj in Chapai-nawabganj. Mizanur wor-ked the night shift at the gas station and was studying for his MBA.
"It is shocking," local customer Benoit Hecquet told The Los Angeles Times. "He was always polite, talkative. And he even asked about how my
son was doing." Los Angeles police were yet to identify the murder suspect. Mizanur was manning the cash counter that night, local Detective Police official Megan Aguilar told reporters.
At this time, an individual confronted him with a pistol, told him to empty the cash box and give its contents to him. The suspect then collected the cash, shot Mizanur several times and drove off in a car.
The wounded Mizanur managed to call 911 and a police team and ambulance soon arrived at the gas station. Mizanur succumbed to his injuries soon after arriving at the emergency ward of the hospital. Police are trying their best to identify the suspect. They are currently reviewing CCTV footage from 32 nearby cameras.
Other Bangladeshi workers at the gas station said Mizan was the only child of his parents. His father Rafique Miah is a retired school teacher. His mother Sultana Begum is a primary school teacher.
"I know this might happen, but I am heartbroken," Mizanur's co-worker Carlos Francisco told The Los Angeles Times. "He was a dreamer. Work by night, study by day to make himself better."
"We are staying in touch with police officials," said Bangladesh Consul in Los Angeles Sudipta Alam. "We have called on them to apprehend the murderer as soon as possible."
Police will transfer the body to the consulate after an autopsy and other standard procedures have been completed, the consul said. The consulate will then make arrangements to fly the body to Mizanur's home town in Bangladesh.
Mizanur came to the US for his MBA in 2014 after completing his BBA degree at Chittagong International University, said Los Angeles City Bangladeshi community leader Mominul Haque Bacchu. The local Bangladeshi community gathered in front of the gas station on Wednesday to demand justice for Mizanur's death, he said.
