Though 20 days of the new year have elapsed, a good number of school students in the district are yet to get new textbooks for all the subjects. Sources at the Primary Education office said the demand for primary textbooks in 1,748 institutions was 12.96 lakh but they have got 11.78 lakh so far.
The textbooks sent to the institutions in Koira, Terkhada and Rupsa upazilas was 10 percent less than the total demand while in Sadar, Fultala, Paikgacha, Batiaghata and Dakope upazilas the figure was 8 percent less. About 20 percent books have not reached the schools in Dighalia upazila.
Besides, the demand for secondary textbooks was 25.28 lakh where 24.27 lakh have so far been delivered.Principal of Khulna Collegiate School and College Tohiduzzaman said, "We've not yet received any book of primary and secondary levels yet."
Contacted, acting Primary Education officer of Sadar upazila Md Abul Kashem said books had been sent to all the schools in the upazila. If there is additional demand for books for any school, it will be provided soon, he added.
District secondary education officer Khandakar Ruhul Amin said they will complete sending the books according to the demands in one week's time. More than four million students of Bangladesh's primary and secondary schools have got new textbooks on the first day of 2017 as customary to every year.
Bangladeshi Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid inaugurated textbooks distribution program. The Bangladeshi government every year has been distributing text books among students in line with its promise to ensure education for all.
