A three-day exhibition titled "Junk Art" is being featured in Space Apt, Gulshan, where each of the items have been up cycled by reusing regular objects/scraps and transformed into modern, industrial household functional pieces. Organized by designers Farhan and Nabila Rahman, who are also friends, the artworks are being showcased on the rooftop of Space Apartments.
It is Farhan and Nabila's first such exhibition consisting of objects such as chandeliers made out of hurricane lanterns, a console table with a bicycle as base and more. "We were inspired from the leftover scrap from shipping sites and other sites," said Farhan, an interior designer, "so we decided why not turn them into usable pieces for our friends and family to use." Nabila cited the mundane nature of furniture found in today's homes. "This was our attempt to set it apart from the conventional items," she said.
Also an art curator, Nabila added that they did not want to limit the pieces to just mere artworks. "We wanted to make them unique, original, worth using and also artistic products at the same time." The objects were sourced from shipyards in Chittagong and other construction sites, given Farhan's business ventures in the port city. So far, they have received a favorable response from the crowd, even selling a few items in the process.
They informed that photographers also came, took pictures and spread them on social media, which sparked more interest. "If our work is different, then people's attention will be drawn," she said. For future, they plan on coming up with newer product lines with new themes. "The title of Junk Art has complimented our work," said Farhan, "it has attracted a lot of curiosity from the people and has changed their perception about art pieces being just mere decorations." The exhibition commenced on February 17 and ended yesterday.
