Chittagong University (CU) observed the 98th birthday of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Friday. CU VC Prof Dr Ifthekhar Uddin Chowdhury, Pro VC Prof Dr Shirin Akter cut the cake at the function. -AA
The birthday of Banga-bandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was celebrated in the port city Chittagong with due solemnity.
Speakers at the function, organized to mark the day, said, "Banga-bandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is the father of Bangali nation. If Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was not born, we never could get the independent Bang-ladesh. We should uphold the spirit of liberation war of 1971 to establish ideology of Bangabandhu."
A light procession was brought out by the Chittagong District administration in observance of the day. The procession started from Chittagong Circuit House premises at 9am yesterday and ended at Chittagong Shilpokola Academy. Later a rally was held at Chittagong Shilpokola Academy. The rally was chaired by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chittagong Shamsul Arefin. Acting Divisional Commissioner of Chittagong Sayeda Sarwar Jahan addressed the rally as the chief guest. Besides, DIG of Chittagong Shafiqul Islam and SP of Chittagong Nur-e Alam Mina addressed the function as special guest.
Poet Abul Momen was also present on the occasion as key speaker. 'Amra Kojon Mujib Sena' arranged a dance competition at Muslim Hall in the port city in the morning on the day. More than 200 children took part in the competition. Mayor of Chittagong City Corpo-ration AJM Nasir Uddin distributed prizes among the participants and winners as the chief guest. Tarek Solaiman Selim chaired the prize distribution ceremony. Banga-bandhu Shangskritik Jote arranged children's festival in observance of the day at Enayet Bazar Mohila College hall yesterday. Begum Mushtari Shafi addressed the function as the chief guest. The children festival was inaugurated by Awami League leader Mahatab Uddin Chow-dhury. The program was chaired by Engineer Rafikul Islam Manik. Among others Khorshed Alam, Haji Mohammed Shahab Uddin, Mir Abdur Rahman Mamun, Ashraful Alam Arju, Yasir Arafat, Tipu Shil Joydev, Reba Barua addressed the program.
