Leading theatre troupe Padatik Natya Sangsad will stage their much acclaimed monodrama Gohonjatra today at Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at 7:00pm. The troupe will be staging this play to remember Syed Badruddin Hossain, a pioneer language activist, educationist and columnist, on his 8th death anniversary. This is one of the acclaimed new productions of the troupe.
Through this monodrama Padatik Natya Sangsad promotes a world free from war and violence where human beings can freely exercise their rights without terror or bigotry. Written by Rubayat Ahmed and directed by Sudip Chakroborty, the drama illustrates how the world has become violent and fanatical. The story circles around Salma, the only character in the play, who runs away from an area torn by violence and chauvinism, where any voice against the dominant ideologies is silenced. Women, children and artists are not safe there, either.
Salma, played by Padatik artiste Shamsi Ara Sayeka, narrates three incidents where a girl named Saima was raped and killed, while a child named Bahar and Salma's lover Aryan, a violin-player, were also killed. One of the significant features of the play includes Salma's conversation where she talks with her inner self. Identified as Pom, Salma and her inner self talk about an ideal world where there will be no violence and human beings will live in perfect harmony with other natural elements.
