Workers of the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) have the right to form trade union (TU) at factory as it is their basic right, European Parliament delegation has said. The delegation has said there are many factories where there are trade unions which are out of the EPZ but a huge number of industries are yet to form trade unions.
They were speaking at press conference on "discussion meeting between European Union (EU) Parliamentary delegation and BGMEA" at a city hotel on Monday. The delegation members of EU Arne Lietz, Co-rapporteur on the Garment Report, Linda McAvan, EP Chair of the Development Committee, Nobert Neuser, Development Coordinator of S&D and Agnes Jongerius, Member of International Trade Committee of S&D are now visiting Bangladesh to observe RMG sector.
A four-member delegation discussed with Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) leaders about the latest improvement of apparel sector. The delegation has said liberal democracy, freedom of speech and expression of free-thinking are essential to combat terrorism, which is now a global phenomenon.
"To strengthen democracy in Bangladesh, it is prerequisite to practise inclusive democracy to prevent terrorism. Simultaneously Bangladesh needs a suitable strategic policy to counter terrorism." BGMEA President Siddiqur Rahman, FBCCI Vice-president Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, BGMEA Vice-presidents Mohammad Nasir, Mahmud Hasan Khan, Ferdous Parvez, Managing Director of Mohammandi Group Rubana Huq were present at the occasion.
Siddiqur Rahman said "We could not say as the sector has done all of development work for continue our business the sector has to more improve in several sector." He said with the delegation their discussion d was fruitful. They have discussed on number of issue including tread union and trade union of EPZ area.
