Voting in the Comilla City Corporation election begins at8:00am today amid tight security. Themain electoral battle for the mayoral post is likely to take place betweenAwami League nominated candidate Anjum Sultana Shima, a former councillor andBNP-backed Monirul Huque Sakku, the immediate-past mayor.
Two other mayoral candidates are Md Mamunur Rashid with'Table Clock' symbol (independent) and Shirin Akter with 'Star' symbol fromJSD.
The Election Commission said that it would not allow anyirregularities in the Comilla City Corporation polls.
Police also announced a zero-tolerance policy againstdisturbance and violence.
As many as 3,714 members from different law enforcingagencies are deployed to hold the polls in a credible manner. Apart from that36 executive magistrates and nine judicial magistrates will also be watchingthe elections.
Besides, 114 candidates are contesting for 27 generalcouncillor posts while 41 women for nine reserved seats.
A total of 207,566 voters -- 102,447 males and 105,119females -- are expected to exercise their voting rights at 103 polling stationsto elect their city mayor, councilors.
