Ishrat Binte Aftab has amazed by the forfeiting intellect of the writer that prompts a well-pictured analogy of our life
American novelist Tim O'Brien once remarked, "That's what fiction is for. It's for getting at the truth when the truth isn't sufficient for the truth." The truth is necessary, in all forms. Contemporary writer Debabrata Bhowmik has dredged up the truth of daily life in his recent book 'Golpo ta amader' which is published by 'Borshadupur' in last Ekushey Book fair. It is a collection of short stories or I would say a mine of open secrets that we swallow with our sighs everyday.
Short stories are immaculate beauty, I believe. They are teeny weeny pieces of life yet possess an ocean of fervor. Debrata has captured stories from every nook and corner of the society. That's what have made this book special. Every page was opening a new scenario to me while reading this. I felt like I am going through lives-with their sorrows-their smile-their tragic trajectories. Joynal did touch me, so did toma. When she fell on the station my heart skipped a beat and may be that's what intense stories require. Also, a bubble of nothingness went through my head while Saleh regretted for his desired parenthood. Let's not unlock the door of scribble's den!
What makes someone a good writer? A tricky question I often ask myself. The answer might vary, but if I say touching life is one of the key feature of being a good writer not many will disagree with me. Almost all parts of literature have its share with life-may be in different intensities-may be in different dimension. However, Debabrata has outmatched every other young writers in the anecdote-contest with flying colors! One of the secret ingredients of his scribbles are those simple things of life which we often ignore as negligible but apparently those takes up an astronomical place in our heart, unmindfully. As a mastered writer he has established his every story on those detailing which made the book more worthy of reading. Then again, Debabratahas sung the hymn of human nature in his magic words where the little discomforts or emptiness we hide deep inside of our heart has come out. That's what we call crackerjack way of presenting, isn't it? By the same token, his spontaneous storyline certainly has fulfilled the criteria of successful contemporary writer. As a new member of writer hub, writer has won one great risk of writing-redundancy which deserves a big pile of appreciation forsooth!
As a point of suggestion, Debabrata could use more smooth transitions for stories. As short stories delineate a small segment of time where space of transition is very less, therefore, being careful about jumping from one scenario to other should be more fluent. Furthermore, dialects were pretty forceful sometimes and not authentic too. Other than that, the book is the definition of almost perfect! The writer showed couple of his qualities evidently in his writing. One of them is observation power which has helped him to add tiny details in every story. Throughout the book, writer has maintained his utmost spontaneity, may be because the vantage point he saw life from is quite a different one! Debabratahas pointed out the harsh truth, no matter how badly we try to escape from it, this is there-the love-the sorrow-the nothingness; all there, tangled together! And that is what called life. He deserves a standing ovation not only for writing a great book at early age but also for understanding the beauty of life! The writer is schooling with BRAC University and she can be reached at
