Member Secretary of Committee to Protect Oil, Gas and Mineral Reso-urces Professor Anu Muhammad has recently said the damages caused to haors by the ongoing floods are beyond monetary calculations. These damages will cast severe impact on the livelihood of farmers and on the country's economy, he stated.
Crops worth more than 4 thousand crore taka have been devastated by floods and heavy rainfall which will jeopardize food supply, food security and will increase food prices, Anu Muhammad expressed concern. Anu Muhammad asserted the government should admit the disastrous circumstances prevailing across the affected areas and should take up immediate steps for aiding the local people quickly and effectively. He complained that the government often tries to deny problems and harbors a tendency to hide reality.
Crisis increases when disasters are not admitted by the authorities, Anu Muhammad further said. He emphasized on swift initiatives by Ministry of Disaster Management to assist the farmers of the areas which have been direly harmed by the current season's floods.
Anu Muhammad questioned how much misery is required by Ministry of Disaster Management to take the situation across haors seriously. The concerned authorities are not playing their roles properly which is why circumstances in the affected areas are deteriorating, he cited. People's sufferings will escalate in this way if the government does not accept the reality, Anu Muhammad further added. He also remarked that corruption has become a huge economic malpractice in the country. It is reflected through the dilapidated condition of broken roads and bridges, he added.
Anu Muhammad blamed institutional weakness for inefficiency in assessment of expenditure and evaluating standard of work in different projects. The magnitude of corruption is expanded by the influence of commission-mongers, he said. Corruption benefits a few people but incurs losses for the entire country, he commented.
