Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said "We have not entered any pact with Hefazat. Signing pacts with Hefazat is beyond questions. There is no room for useless controversy over this issue." Sheikh Hasina made these comments on Tuesday at Gonobhaban during a meeting with Awami League's Local Government Nomination Board.
Recalling the roles played by Qwaumi madrassas in movement against British colonial forces, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "No one can deny the contributions of Qwaumi madrassas for Bangladesh's education. Indian government has also accepted the curriculum of Qwaumi madrassas. Both Muslims and Hindus study in madrassas of Kolkata. Some madrassas of Kolkata have almost 40% Hindu pupils."
Prime Minister further said "Qwaumi madrassas' education is divided into six boards. Their curriculums are different. Students learn Arabic, Persian and Urdu in those madrassas. Some madrassas teach computer science too. There are 14 lakh students in 75 thousand Qwaumi madrassas of the country.
Nobody can precisely say what is their curriculum or what they are learning. They don't find jobs in any organizations. Their education has no value. Should we throw away lives of these 14 lakh pupils?"
Responding to remarks by denigrators, the Prime Minister asked, "Are not Qwaumi madrassas' students our country's citizens? Why should we push them towards darkness? Should not we enlighten them? We made efforts long ago to standardize their education system so that they can stand on their own feet."
Sheikh Hasina told, "I held meetings with the hierarchy of all madrassas after forming government in 2009. After discussions with them, they agreed to unite all six boards of Qwaumi madrassas and accepted the curriculum.
Then we made the announcements about certificates. Simultaneously, we have set up a committee to reform their curriculum. We have also established Islamic Arabic University for issuing certificates to qualified students."Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina further said, "We want to bring everyone under the umbrella of inclusive education for better livelihood of all concerned."
