Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) removed parts of their security features, including 33 concrete plaster blocks, from the footpath in front of the Australian Embassy in the capital. DNCC Chief Engineer Brig Gen (Retd) Md Sayed Anwarul Islam led the drive at Gulshan North Avenue yesterday.
"Now the pedestrians' move would be smoother," hoped the engineer and added: "Footpath is for the citizens. However, they were facing troubles in commuting as the walkways in front of the embassies were occupied."
DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq previously discussed the issue with the embassies. The discussions were fruitful, commented Islam. However, there are iron poles and some other installments on the footpaths at southern part and backside of the embassy.
Those will be cleared by May 7, said DNCC officials adding the road would be 10 feet wide after removal of the features. DNCC notified eight embassies in city's Gulshan area on February 28 following a directive of the High Court.
Later, the US Embassy and Canadian Embassy in Dhaka freed the footpaths in front of their embassies for the commuters in response to the DNCC request. The footpaths in front of Italian, Russian, Saudi Arabian and Pakistan Embassy were also reclaimed by the DNCC-led drives.
