At least 400 employees of several garment factories fell sick due to scorching heat at Konabari and Kashimpur in Gazipur on Thursday. Police said around 400 employees of eight garment factories in Kashim-pur and Konabari areas fell sick due to the hot weather in the morning.
The authorities concerned of the factories took them to different hospitals and clinics in the area. Meanwhile, the garment authorities have shut down the factories for yesterday following the incident. Police were deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incident.
A heat wave has swept across the country and will stay for a few more days, Bangladesh Meteoro-logical Department disclosed in its latest weather bulletin. In the capital, people, including students, rickshaw-pullers, day laborers, office goers, were facing immense sufferings amid the scorching heat.
Recently the temperature level has crossed or remained around 40 degree Celsius. In meteorological terms, a severe heat wave occurs when temperature goes beyond 40 degrees Celsius.
However, the hot weather may continue for some more days, Met office sources said. After being exhausted by the scorching summer heat rickshaw pullers are often seen sleeping under trees on their rickshaw beside the streets. The day laborers have been suffering due to the excessive heat.
Many people including women and children are facing several sickness due to the scorching heat. Children with problems like high fever, cough and diarrhea are reportedly being admitted into hospitals. Any relief from the searing heat seems unlikely as the prevailing heat wave may continue for 3-4 days more, according to Met office.
On Wednesday, the Met office said the heat wave might continue for 2-3 more days. It, however, on Thursday said the heat have may last for another 3-4 days. According to the Met office, a mild heat wave is sweeping over Dhaka, Khulna and Barisal divisions and the regions of Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Chand-pur, M'court, Feni, Hatiya and Cox's Bazar.
Meanwhile, rain or thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind , are likely to occur at one or two places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country, it said.
Country's highest temperature on Thursday was recorded 37.7 degree Celsius in Khulna and Dhaka experienced the highest 36.6 degrees.
