A commission, led by Prof Serajul Islam Chou-dhury, has been formed to investigate the flashflood in haor areas and to propose a permanent solution for the region. The 26-member committee was revealed at a press conference at Jatiya Press Club yesterday. "The body has been formed being self motivated for the sake of the nation as well as the county," member secretary of the commission Hasnat Quayum observed.
The commission will visit the flood affected haor areas and collect information. It will analyze the governmental and non-governmental data and policies," he said. "The solution observing the national and international laws and acts on river, water distribution and nature will be presented for the people to consider. The commission is committed and will play active role in realizing the demands of haor people," Quayum concluded.
Prof Anu Muhammad, a member of the commission, said they were happy for being able to form the committee. He claimed the commission would suggest the mode of development at haor region. Speakers at the press conference said that haor areas contribute 18 percent of total paddy production of the country. It also meets the lion's portion of fish supply.
The country has nearly 374 to 411 haors. This year's flashflood damaged 80 percent of the Boro production and the estimated loss is above Tk 5,000 crore. Engineer M Inamul Haque, Jotirmoy Barua, Swapan Adnan and Rizwana Hasan also spoke at the press conference while Prof Serajul Islam Choudhury replied to the questions of the reporters present.
