The retail price of shoe on the eve of the Eid festival has increased tremendously this year for which the traders blame higher production cost.Several markets including Mirpur, New market, Keraniganj, Islampur, Sadarghat and Gulistan in the city are now busy to deliver shoes for the Eid customers.
After visiting several areas of the city, the Asian Age correspondent has found hundreds of shoe manufacturers busy with packing the products for the wholesale markets.Absar Uddin, general secretary of Gulistan City Market, biggest wholesale shoe market of the country, said, they have shoes priced at Tk 150 to 2500.
He said, from their market they are delivering more than 5 to 6 million pairs of shoes every year which is 50 to 60 percent of the total use of the country and their total prices are approximately Tk 6.5 to Tk 7 billion. "This year our lowest price range is from Tk 150 to Tk 3,000." He also said, their manufactured shoes are being delivered across the country including many shops in the capital.
"We always try to keep the price within the buying capacity of every class of customers. This year the price has increased by 20 to 30 percent due to rise in production cost," he said.Faisal Kabir, owner of My Choice Shoes Store of Mirpur, said, at Gulistan City Market he had gone to buy shoes but the prices seemed to him exorbitant.
He also said, "Shoe price rise will force me to raise the price at the retail level. Youths of the capital are now busy in searching the best for them around the showrooms."
Azgor Ali, a student of Dhaka Collage, said, at New Market it took them Tk 150 to Tk 200 more for buying shoes compared to the last year's price.
Asma Aktar of Mirpur said she would like to buy shoes for her boys but prices are high. As a result she has to count extra money, she added.
