The car of Ganajagaran Mancha spokesperson Imran H Sarker has been attacked as he left the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court after attending the hearing of a case against him. Sarker and Ganajagaran Mancha activist Sanatan Ullash had turned themselves in to the court on Sunday on defamation charges and secured bail.
A group of men attacked Sarker's car as he was leaving the court, pelting it with rotten eggs. The attackers chanted pro-Awami League slogans, reports bdnews24.com. The plaintiff in the case, Golam Rabbani, a leader of the party's student front, was among the attackers, say witnesses.
"Chhatra League thugs attacked us on the court premises. If such attacks can occur at the court, how can everyone respect the judiciary?" Sarker said in a Facebook post after the incident. Bangladesh Chhatra League is the student affiliate of the ruling Awami League.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate SM Masud Zaman earlier on May 31 asked Sarker and Sanatan to appear before it yesterday to explain their stance. BCL leader Golam Rabbani filed the defamation case against the duo with the court on May 31.
According to the case statement, Imran and Sanatan chanted defamatory slogans against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on May 27 over the removal of the statue of Lady Justice from the Supreme Court premises.
