The unloading of rice from the ship MV Visad has started at Chittagong port from Tuesday morning. The MV Visad, loaded with 20,000 MT rice reached at the outer anchorage of Chittagong port on July 13.
However, the MV Visad could not enter to the jetty Tuesday (July 18) for unloading the imported rice as the ship is big to enter to the jetty. The rice is unloading by lightering system by the lighterage ships, said sources in Chittagong Port Authority.
Sources said, the rice was being imported from Vietnam. Meanwhile, the officials of the Food Department collected the samples of the rice from the ship MV Visad.
Sources said, the importers are importing 250,000 MT rice from Vietnam to face the food crisis in Bangladesh. Of these, a total of 150,000 MT rice will be imported in the current and next month. Later, on second phase, the rest 100,000 MT rice will be imported, said sources in importers.
Meanwhile, another ship from Vietnam named MV Pax loaded with 27,000 MT rice has reached the outer anchorage of Chittagong port.
Sources said, ship MV Pax, loaded with 27,000 MT rice has reached at the outer anchorage of Chittagong port on Tuesday. The ship was scheduled to reach Chittagong port on July 20. But, the ship reached at the outer anchorage of the Chittagong port as the weather is now quite normal.
