Vietnam has detected over 50,000 dengue fever cases so far this year, including 15 fatalities, the Preventive Medicine Department said on Thursday.
Bach Mai Hospital, one of the biggest medical establishments in Vietnam, has treated 25-30 dengue fever cases each month since May, while the number of such patients was around 10 per month from January to April.
Besides the increase in dengue fever infections, the hospital in Hanoi capital has recorded another worrying fact: a surge in fatalities of brain hemorrhage, a serious complication of dengue fever.
The hospital has seen five dengue fever patients die from brain hemorrhage this year. In previous years, it saw only one or two cases a year.
Local doctors said the key reason for the surge in dengue fever infections is the early coming of rainy season which has created favorable conditions for mosquitoes to breed and grow quickly.
When downpours and floods struck Vietnam in July, such diseases as dengue fever, malaria, diarrhea and flu broke out easily.
