More than 52,000 tree saplings were planted in one hour by the members of Department of Primary Education (DPE) everywhere in Rajshahi division Sunday. They planted saplings of different woody, fruit bearing and medicinal plants at their respective institution premises in all eight districts under the division from 12 noon to 1 pm simultaneously.
In addition to 49,435 teachers, all district and upazila education offices, resource centres, primary teachers institutes along with their students took part in the plantation programme spontaneously. To mark the occasion, DPE divisional office organized a press conference at PTI conference hall here yesterday afternoon giving an overview of the program, reports BSS.
Divisional Deputy Director Abul Khair, Assistant Director Abul Kalam Azad, District Primary Education Officer Nafisha Begum, PTI Superintendent Muza-hidul Islam and Education Officers Md Sanaullah and Saiful Islam spoke on the occasion.
Abul Khair said the fury of nature has been causing various naturaldisasters like tornado, droughts, floods and other natural calamities for a long time due to climate change threatening habitation, environment, ecology and agriculture.
"Massive tree plantation and increasing forest resources area could protect environment, ecology and bio-diversity to halt the deteriorating situation and save many living species of animals, birds, insects and other flora and fauna including fishes from extinction," he said.
He narrated beneficial aspects of forests and important role of trees in human life and cited examples of the Sundarbans that saved millions of lives when the sidr hit the coastal belts of the country in 2007.
Abul Khair also called upon every citizen for planting fruit bearing, timber and medicinal plants to improve environment and bio-diversity along with meeting nutritional demand, getting economic benefits and saving the country from natural disasters.
