The parliamentary standing committee on the Shipping Ministry on Thursday suggested the authorities concerned take necessary steps for starting the construction work of a jetty and a terminal in Chittagong seaport and procure equipment for proper management of the port.
It also recommended naming the St. Martin's station of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) as St. Martin's Landing Station or St. Martin's Offshore Landing Station.
The parliamentary watchdog came up with the suggestions at its 45th meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad with its chairman Maj (retd) Rafiqul Islam MP in the chair, said a Parliament Secretariat handout.
At the meeting, the committee recommended the ministry to hold a press conference to present the 'real scenario' of the Chittagong Port, for long the country's principal sea-port. Committee members Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, Talukdar Abdul Khalek, Abdul Hye, Habibar Rahman, Md Abdul Latif, Ranajit Kumar Ray, Anwarul Azim (Anar) and Momotaz Begom Advocate, among others, attended the meeting.
