The number of internet users in the country has increased to 67.24 lakh in the first six months of the current year, said data published by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) till June this year. However, there are 34 lakh active internet connections in June last, the data showed.
According to BTRC data, about 93.65 percent of total connections of internet through mobile phones is 6.87 crore. And there are 46.22 lakh connections through ISPs. By the end of June, the active WiMAX connections are only 75 thousand. Mean-while, in the last six months, four mobile phone operators have added more than 9 95,000 active SIMs to their network.
As a result, the country's total mobile connections have reached 13 crore 59 lakh by the end of June. Grameenphone is in the top position with their 6.16 crore users but in last six months, the leading operator could only add 36 lakh 25 thousand new connections in their network.
On the other hand, after merger of Robi and Airtel recently, they added 57 lakh 39 thousand new connections at the end of June and total active connections have stood at 3,766 crore. However, Bang-lalink also passed a quite good time during this period. In these six months, they added 56 lakh 64 thousand connections and total connections have stood at 3.16 crore. But
when other operators are growing, the state-owned operator Teletalk has taken the opposite turn. In six months, their active connections have decreased more than 3 lakh 73 thousand leaving the number of users only 32 lakh 60 thousand.
Earlier, the active mobile internet connections crossed the milestone of seven-crore by the end of April this year. In March last year, the country reached the milestone of six million internet connections. Internet connections reached 5 crore in July, 2015. Approximately 400 Gbps bandwidth is being used in conjunction with all these connections. Last year, the use of total internet data was 163 Gbps.
According to telecom operators, 3G has made significant contribution to the mobile phone internet service in terms of connectivity. And that's why the data consuming jumping significantly.
The Internet came late to Bangladesh with connectivity in 1996. In the last few years it has grown dramatically, although obviously from a very low base. With an estimated user base of around 500,000 in early 2006, representing only a 0.35% penetration, the local Internet industry is preparing to move into the next stage of its development.
