Although millions have been spent in numerous projects for Dhaka transport sector, the average vehicular speed in the metropolis has dropped to 7 kilometer from 21 during the last ten years. The severe traffic congestion in the capital takes heavy toll, estimated Tk 30,000 crore a day. Dhaka dwellers lose nearly 32lakh working hours being trapped in traffic jam every day, and now the transport experts have raised question about the vehicular infrastructure system.
According to their observation, policies with less importance to mass transportation and prioritizing the private vehicles are to blame. Apart from this, most of the city dwellers are not getting the facilities of mega-project such as flyovers and overpass due to the flawed policies.
Speakers at the program yesterday also said that the infrastructure could not be the indicator of development; rather it should be measured through the lens of public transport accessibility. Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA) hosted the seminar at its office in the city. The speakers at the program held private vehicles responsible for frequent congestion.
Citing statistics, they said only four percent of total commuters use cars which occupy 70 percent of the roads. They put forward several recommendations including strict policy to control privately owned vehicles.
