A number of primary schools in Gopalganj District have been inundated by heavy rainfall over the last several days causing water stagnation in the school premises.
Our correspondent, on a visit at No. 107 Sonakur Government Primary School located on Bangab-andhu Road at village Sonakur near Gopalganj district town, found students were attending their classes by crossing knee-deep water.
All the children putting on wet clothes were carrying sodden schoolbags. The local guardians expressed dissatisfaction by saying that the school is located near many important offices of the city, such as: upazila sadar office, upazila and district primary education office, circuit house, LGED office, education engineering department etc, but little care is taken for it.
They demanded measures to remove the water-logging problem from the school grounds. In this context, Gopalganj Sadar Upazila Primary Education Officer Sheikh Md. Nurul Islam told this correspondent that the problem was a longstanding one. With the help of local people and their representatives, steps will be taken soon to remove the problem.
Emdad Shikdar, a member of school management committee and member of 9 No ward of Borashi Union, said that "When it rains, the school premises are filled with water immediately. The children cannot come to the school properly. For that, normal education is obstructed."
