Pouli rail bridge in Elenga upazila of Tangail partly collapsed due to onrush of floodwater, causing disruption of rail communications between eastern and western parts of the country. -AA
All trains services to northern and south-western parts of the country was cancelled yesterday as a railway bridge was partly damaged in Kalihati upazila of Tangail due to the onrush of floodwater. Station master of Gharinda Railway Station Jalaluddin said they noticed the matter at about 5:30am and stopped the train movement through the bridge, reports BSS.
Around 20 feet area of the basement of Pungli river rail bridge partly collapsed due to an onrush of floodwater little after Sundarban Express, a Dhaka-bound inter-city train from Khulna, crossed the bridge, he said. As a result, around five to six trains got stuck on both sides of the bridge that led to immense suffering to the travelers, said Jalaluddin, adding, a team has been working to repair the bridge as soon as possible. Efforts were underway to complete repairs and resume services as soon as possible, said Bangladesh Railway Western Rajshahi Region Executive Engineer Ramzan Ali.
Earlier on August 19, around 100 meters basement of the railway track near Medical intersection rail-gate in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat got wash away by the floodwater turning the railway track like a hanging bridge. Consequently, the railway communication from Burimari port to other parts in the country via the railway was disrupted. Not only that, the rail link between Dhaka and Jamalpur was snapped as the rail line at Tarakandi area was damaged due to strong current of floodwater.
