"I visited Bombay when I was 14 years old, but ended up staying back to find work for myself. The village I come from, the sole purpose of a woman is to produce kids and take care of her husband, but I wanted to make something of myself.
Within a year, an elderly lady took a liking to me and employed me as her house help and slowly gave me more responsibility at her fabric shop. It was there, that I met a man who I fell in love with and married at the age of 19. Sadly, I had to stop working at the old lady's shop but I began to look for work, relentlessly.
Finally after I had looked for a while I began to work as domestic help at a place that became like my family. I cook and clean for them, but everyday they teach me how to read and write. In just a few months, I can read basic English and the favorite part of my day is opening the newspaper in the morning and reading to Papaji.
This part of my life is great, but there are certain aspects of my in-laws which still bother me. They're really conservative and have very strange customs which they want me to follow. Just a few weeks ago, because there was a death in the family, they wanted me to stop going to work, but thankfully I've found a great support system in my husband. (excerpt)
