Law enforcement agencies detained six businessmen and seized 2,071 sacks of rice allotted by the government for Vulnerable Group Development program in Sirajganj and Bogra on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Law enforcement agencies seized the rice illegally stored in the warehouses at a time when the prices of the staple have gone to unusually high levels, allegedly for market manipulation by some syndicates.
Our Sirajganj Correspo-ndent said, a team of the Rapid Action Battalion, acting on a tip-off, stormed into Razzak Traders in Sirajganj Rail Gate area on Wednesday and seized 1,706 sacks of VGD rice. Rab-12 company commander major Safayat Ahmed Sumon said that they detained the warehouse owner Abdur Razzak for illegally storing the rice. A case was filed in this connection.
Our Bogra Correspo-ndent said, the police on Wednesday seized 223 sacks of VGD rice from a rice mill owned by Akber Ali at Dupchanchia upazila in the district and arrested three businessmen in this connection.
Dhupchachia police Officer-in-charge Abdur Razzak said that they, tipped-off, had carried out the drive there and seized the rice. Akber's son Zahurul Islam and two other businessmen, Nurul Islam and Shafikul Islam, were arrested following the incident, said the police officer.
He said that the rice was stored there illegally for selling in black market. A case was filed in this connection. In another incident, the Sariakandi police arrested Masud Miah and Yunus Ali for illegally storing VGD rice in a rice mill at Mathurapara Bazar in the district on Tuesday night.
Sub-inspector Ziaur Rahman of Sariakandi police said that they had seized 142 sacks of rice allotted for the poor under the VGD program. A case was filed in this connection, he added.
