People of Chittagong are continuing the protest and processions against the Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) and ward councilors for increasing the holding taxes abnormally. After sending a letter by president of Chittagong City Awami League and former mayor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) A B M Mohiuddin Chowdhury, another former mayor M Manjur Alam also sent a letter to incumbent mayor A J M Nasir Uddin protesting the increase in holding taxes.
M Manjur Alam Manju urged the incumbent mayor Nasir Uddin not to increase the taxes as the service is yet to be improved ion the port city. He sent a letter to incumbent mayor Nasir Uddin on Sunday saying the process of fixation of taxes by the incumbent CCC body is creating dissatisfaction among the Chittagong people. So, the mayor should review the decision of increasing the taxes.
He also said when he took the charge of mayor of CCC, there were one lakh and 25 thousand holdings in 41 wards and CCC got Tk 19 crore as holding tax. Later, the assessment of taxes was Tk 120 crore. "But, I saw that CCC fixed the target of holding taxes in last budget Tk 851 crore which is a burden on the people of Chittagong." He observed that although the Mayor did nothing in the current tenure, the CCC is increasing taxes. He urged the mayor A J M Nasir Uddin not to increase taxes without increasing the services of CCC. Earlier, on October 4, president of Chittagong City Awami League and former mayor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) A B M Mohiuddin Chowdhury sent a letter to Nasir Uddin.
In the letter, he urged the mayor not to increase the holding taxes by the name of reassessment. "People are suffering from the increased holding taxes which are actually increased more than 100 times. Before the upcoming national poll, increase of holding taxes more than 100 times in Chittagong by CCC is creating dissatisfaction among the Chittagong dwellers and they are criticizing the incumbent government. So, the government of Sheikh Hasina is being criticized for unwanted increase of holding taxes," he wrote in the letter.
A B M Mohiuddin Chowdhury requested the CCC authorities not to increase the holding taxes by the name of reassessment. He claimed that he did not increase any taxes during his tenure as mayor of CCC. " I never increased any taxes. But I increased the services. I had established schools, colleges and university under the CCC management. Besides, I had also established health centers, hospitals, introduced vehicles for dead bodies, cleaned the drains and cannels and I had provided many other services without increasing the taxes."
On the other hand, the Kor Data Shurokka Porishad (Tax Payer Safety Porishod) gheraod a ward councilor office of in the port city Chittagong. They also declared a program of ghearo of Mayor's office if the CCC does not cancel the increased taxes.
