Agriculturists have favored for popularizing 'Short duration Aman rice-mustard/potato-mungbean-aus (parija) rice' quadruple cropping pattern among farmers to produce four crops on the same land annually.
"Cultivation of short duration BRRI dhan56 rice followed by farming of potato or mustard adopting the cropping pattern is highly profitable," said Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) for Nilphamari Agriculturist Golam Md Idris.
Idris made the observation at a farmers' field day arranged for harvesting drought tolerant BRRI dhan56 rice in village Melabar Uttarpara under Kishoreganj upazila in Nilphamari on Sunday afternoon as the chief guest, a press release said on Monday.
The DAE in association with Barovita Union Federation (BUF) organized the event on the BRRI dhan56 rice field of farmer Bidhu Bhushan Roy with Chairman of BUF Arbindu Roy in the chair. Kishor-eganj Upazila Agriculture Officer Agriculturist Enamul Haque, Program Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh for Nilphamari KM Rashedul Arefin, among others, addressed.

Arefin said cultivation of BRRI dhan56 rice continues since 2012 and 700 farmers have cultivated the rice to harvest within 100-110 days and cultivate mustard, potato or other early winter crops in Nilphamari during this Aman season.
Agriculturist Enamul Haque said, "Almost no attack of pests has so far been noticed while cultivating short duration BRRI dhan56 rice that gives fine variety rice and is suitable for producing best quality puffed rice, 'Khoi' or flattened rice. The chief guest said farmers have already started reaping profits by farming short-duration BRRI-dhan-56 rice.
