It is time for this ugliness to be put to an end. The manner in which accusations, charges and innuendo are being hurled at Chief Justice SK Sinha can only undermine the collective self-esteem of the nation. With some people speaking up for the CJ and some others believing that he has indeed committed grave wrongs, the situation has reached a point where it is the constitutionally stipulated relationship between the executive and the judiciary which is fast becoming frayed.
Chief Justice Sinha has given the country new material for the continuing drama over his role in the Supreme Court. His assertion prior to his departure for Australia that he had not been ill flies in the face of the government's assertion that is ill with cancer and to that end has sought leave to travel abroad. The government insists that was his position.
Now, frankly, we do not have any idea of what has actually been happening. And now there are the added accusations, eleven charges in all, against the Chief Justice. The Law Minister has suggested the ACC could take up the matter. Fine. But let this ugliness of a real life drama be pulled to an end. What has happened so far has not exactly been redeeming for anyone.
