The death of freedom fighter Abul Masud Sadique Chullu is once more a moment for us to recall the great contributions our brave young men and women made to the cause of national liberty forty six years ago. Chullu was a soldier of freedom who, like every other freedom fighter in our villages and towns, plunged into the war against the enemy without weighing the consequences of his action. And that was the spirit demonstrated by all those brilliant and brave young men and women who linked up with the Mukti Bahini, secure in their confidence that they would one day free Bangladesh and have it take its place among the global community of independent, self-respecting nations.
Chullu's role in the War of Liberation involved meticulous planning on the many ways in which to harass the Pakistan occupation army in Dhaka and thereby give the lie to the enemy's claim that conditions were normal in 'East Pakistan'. There were other young men with Chullu, each one of them dedicated to the principle that the country mattered above everything else. Some were eventually captured by the enemy and pushed to horrible deaths. Others, like Chullu, were too fast for the enemy to catch them and indeed indulged in acts that surely sowed panic in the occupation army.
Chullu was one of the intrepid freedom fighters who took part in an attack on Hotel Intercontinental (today's Sheraton) in the city. It was an assault news of which reverberated around the world, giving out the clear message that Bengali guerrillas were ready to plunge the dagger into the heart of the enemy. In life, Chullu was part of our history. In death, he becomes one more legend in the chronicles of defining time. He now lies quiet in the land he fought to accord dignity to.
