Several students from Dhaka taking the Rajshahi University admission test have missed their exams after being stuck in traffic.
The university administration says it has heard the reports, but that nothing can be done for those who could not arrive in time for the evaluation.
“We heard from many students that they were stuck in traffic, but there was nothing to be done,” said Rajshahi University Public Relations Office Administrator Dr Provash Kumar Karmokar. “Our exams have started already.”
The admission exams began at 8:30am on Sunday with the tests for the social science faculty’s E-1 sub unit. Examinees from parts of the country were sitting for the exam.
But many who were travelling on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway failed to reach in time due to the traffic. Congestion was severe as rains combined with damaged roads stalled overnight traffic.
“I came to Dhaka from Chittagong on Saturday on my way to the exams,” said Al-Amin Sadique, an admission seeker. “I boarded a Hanif Transport bus for Rajshahi at 7:45pm. We are still stuck on the eastern side of the Jamuna Bridge.”
“I boarded the bus at 7pm on Saturday and am still stuck in Tangail,” said Khadiza Khan from Manikganj. “My exam was at 8:30am. There are many other examinees still stuck on the road.”
“Our bus was to set off at 5:30pm on Saturday and we finally boarded at 8:30pm,” said Abdullah Al-Mansur, the elder brother of an examinee. “Given the state of the traffic, we might arrive sometime around Sunday afternoon. My younger brother’s exam was at 8:30am.”
“My exam is at 10:30am,” said examinee Rahee. “But I don’t think we will arrive in Rajshahi this afternoon. My dreams have been crushed because of the traffic.”
“Ninety percent of our examinees are at the examination centre,” said Rajshahi University Pro Vice Chancellor Ananda Kumar Saha. “Maybe a small percentage is stuck in traffic. We hope they arrive in time for the 10:30am exams.”
Asked if the administration can make any considerations for the delayed students, Saha said: “We can’t do anything for them.”
