Abhijit Chattopadhyay, assistant high commissioner of India in Rajshahi, visited Thakurbari village of Rangpur on Monday morning where villagers attacked the Hindu-dominated village and vandalized and torched houses of the Hindu community over a Facebook post.
Police sources said the diplomat went to the village around 10:12am and stayed there for several minutes. However, he did not make any comments over the issue. Meanwhile, police arrested a total of 53 people including Jamaat-Shibir activists from Gangachhara and Kotwali areas till yesterday.
Earlier on Friday, a man was killed and 20 others, including four policemen, were injured in a clash at Thakurbari village in the sadar upazila over a reported Facebook post by Titu Chandra.
Over the issue, around 8,000 people from nearby villages marched towards Thakurbari village, a Hindu-dominated village and vandalized and torched 8-10 houses of the Hindus.Police on Saturday morning filed a case with Gangachhara Police Station against more than 2,000 people, including 25-30 named ones.
