Mobile users touch 14 crore milestone


The number of mobile subscribers in the country has touched 14 crore milestone, according to the latest report of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on September last published on BTRC website yesterday.

The latest data say, in Bangladesh, there are currently 14.71 crore mobile SIMs out of which 7.38 crore people using internet.  In September last year, the number of mobile subscribers was 11.9 crore while there were 6.30 core internet users in the country.

Compared to the corresponding period last year, country's leading telecom operator Grameenphone (GP) has got 80 lakh mobile subscribers. GP had 5.55 crore subscribers last year and the number has risen to 6.39 crore this year. On the other hand, the number of Robi subscribers was 2.38 crore in the corresponding period of last year but after getting merged with Airtel, the number has stood at 4.12 crore in September this year.

Banglalink's subscribers were 2.95 crore last year and the number has increased to 3.24 crore this. The subscribers of government-owned mobile operator Teletalk were 29 lakh 89 thousand in the same period last year which has increased to 32 lakh 41 thousand this year.

However, the number of WiMAX internet users in the country was 1 lakh in last year, but this year it has reduced to 90 thousand. Besides, ISP and PSTN internet subscribers were 37 lakh 94 thousand last year which reached to 53 lakh 21 thousand this year.

The mobile operators in the country were losing customers for a long time after the mass crackdown on unregistered connections. However, in recent months, mobile and internet subscribers are increasing in a rocket speed. According to BTRC's latest data on August last, Grameenphone has 6.31 crore subscribers, recently merged Robi and Airtel has 4.7 crore, Banglalink has 3.23 and government-owned telecom operator Teletalk has 32 lakh 34 thousand subscribers.

According to BTRC, more than 50 percent people of the country using internet by different service providers. Earlier, in June this year, the country reached the milestone of 7 crore internet connections. Internet connections reached 6 crores in July, 2016. 

Approximately 400 Gbps bandwidth is being used in conjunction with all these connections. Last year, the use of total internet data was 163 Gbps. According to telecom operators, 3G has made significant contribution to the mobile phone internet service in terms of connectivity. And that's why the data consuming jumping significantly. It is scheduled that 4G will be launched in the coming December.

The Internet came late to Bangladesh with connectivity in 1996. In the last few years, it has grown dramatically, although obviously from a very low base. With an estimated user base of around 500,000 in early 2006, representing only a 0.35% penetration, the local Internet industry is preparing to move into the next stage of its development.
