Princess Sophie Helen of the UK on Sunday expressed solidarity with Bangladesh over the Rohingya issue agreeing with Dhaka's call for intensified global pressures on Myanmar to resolve the crisis ending the atrocities, as she called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
"The UK wants repatriation of Rohingyas," premier's press secretary Ihsanul Karim told a media briefing quoting Helen after her meeting with the prime minister at her Ganobhaban official residence.The princess, he said, agreed with Bangladesh stance in seeking sustained international pressure on Myanmar and mounting diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis.
The prime minister said the entire administration, police, army and volunteers were working hard to mitigate the sufferings of the refugees. She thanked the British government for sending relief materials for the forcibly displaced people. The Countess of Wessex and social worker Helen is spearheads a global anti- blindness campaign while she informed the Prime Minister of the vision of "removing avoidable blindness" by 2020.
The princess is set to visit several eye hospitals and facilities in Barisal, Chittagong and Dhaka. The premier explained the princess of the healthcare services extended across the country by her government.She said the Awami League government took a landmark health project soon after assuming power in 1996 elections but the subsequent BNP regime shelved it after taking office in 2001 while it was resumed only after the return of the incumbent government in 2009.
The premier said her government constructed about 18,000 community clinics to provide basic health services to people at grassroots.PM's advisor Dr Gowher Rizvi, Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and British HighCommissioner in Dhaka Alison Blake were present.
