The Anti Corruption Commission has been investigating into wealth of an engineer of the Mongla-Khulna Railway project, who allegedly made huge money through taking bribes and grabbing the property of the railways in illegal means. The accused reportedly gra-bbed property of two hundred crore, sources in the ACC said.
Contacted, Shamsul Haque, an assistant engineer of the Mongla-Khulna Railway Project, refused to make comment against allegations brought by one official of the Railways Department.
Shamsul Haque, once a sub-assistant engineer of Bangladesh Railways, after completing his Diploma from Kushtia Polytechnic Institute joined the Puradah Railway about 22 years back, the sources in the Railways said and later promoted to the post of assistant engineer.
Now, he has been working in the Mongla-Khulna Railway Project. After joining the Railways Department, he bought seven flats and houses in the capital city and his home district, Kushtia, the sources said adding that he deposited four hundred bhories of gold at the lock drawers of four different banks in the capital Dhaka, Khulna and Kushtia.
He deposited nearly five crore taka in the postal savings in Kushtia, according to allegations submitted to the ACC.
The accused maintained five vehicles including Pajeros and bought 10 bighas of land in the name of his wife at his home village Sughandi Baliasisa under Puradah upazila in Kustia.
The allegations lodged to the ACC also said that a house on one bigha of land at 20/7 Court Para Ahmed Road in Kushtia district headquarters and also another house at Customs Road Square in Kushtia. Both the houses were bought in the name of his wife Shahina Akhter alias Shabana, the sources said stating that two separate flats were bought by him at K R L Tower also in the name of his children and wife.
The accused bought land and constructed a five-storied market named Aleef Laam Market at Kushtia Court Station Road sources said adding that he also constructed a two-storied market at Puradah bazaar of Mirpur Upazila in the district. The accused set up a garment factory named Tania Market at the bazaar. All these establishments and business houses were bought in the name of his wife, son and daughters, the sources said.
The sources allegedly said that the accused bought two separate flats at Japan Garden City in the capital's Mohammadpur area. The number of the flats are 302 and 604 of building number 10 and 15 respectively, the sources alleged saying that he also bought a shop at Mohammadpur Tokyo Shopping Mall at two crore taka.
The sources said that the accused and his wife maintained seven bank accounts at the branches of Sonali Bank Limited and Mutual Trust Bank Limited respectively in Kuhstia town. The accused sold out the raw materials of the Mongla-Khulna Railway Project in the underground world for milking the organization.
The accused cheat the job seekers of his home town Kustia and Khulna by alluring them lucrative jobs in the Mongla-Khulna Railway Project and grabbed nearly Tk 35 crore, one of the sources in the said. He reportedly made a contract of Tk five crore with the job seekers, the sources said adding that rest of the money will be recovered by him after giving the jobs.
