Former Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni said the government of Bangladesh had been working relentlessly to ensure the equal and active participation of women in the mainstream socio-economic activities of the country. "Women's rights are human rights," said Dipu Moni, also chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, at an event in the UN headquarters in New York recently mentioning that Bangla-desh would continue to empower women to unlock their potentials.
The Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) arranged the event titled 'Empowering parliaments to empower women: Making the economy work for women' on the side lines of the sixty-first session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), said a press release on Sunday. Dr Moni was leading the Bangladesh parliamentary delegation to the IPU event. Abdul Latif, MP and Saira Mohsin, MP were the other members of the delegation.
Delivering her speech, Dipu Moni underscored that the economic empowerment of the women cannot be achieved without addressing the deeply entrenched discriminatory norms and legal barriers to women's autonomy. "Defying all local and international obstacles, a considerable number of women in Bangladesh are in decision-making roles," she said.
"The government has facilitated the overall development of women by introducing gender responsive budgeting and skill development, ensuring their access to the digital world. We have also emphasized on financial inclusion of women in the 7th five Year Plan," she added.
In a session titled "Promoting the Financial Inclusion of Women", Mexican Senator, who was also a panelist, highly praised the efforts made by the government of Bangladesh to ensure financial inclusion of women. During the program, the parliamentarians from different countries highlighted the role that the parliaments could play to materialize gender equality and shared best practices in their respective countries.
