Prachyanat, one of the most popular theatre troupes, staged its acclaimed play Kinu Kaharer Thetar at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy yesterday.
Written by Manaj Mitra and directed by Kazi Toufiqul Islam Emon, Kinu Kaharer Thetar revolves around an imaginary kingdom, Putna, which is ruled by an autocratic king. The play goes forward with several humorous incidents and ultimately unveils a crucial truth. The prime minister of the kingdom molests a woman.
So the English Lord issues an order, "If the woman doesn't get justice I will toss the throne". The king falls in a tough trouble as the minister is his closest mate and he depends on him very much. So the king advises him to falsely fix a man who will admit the crime as his own deed and take the punishment instead of the minister.
So, a lazy man, namely Ghantakarna becomes the 'criminal' and in return his wife Jagadambha takes four bags of money from the king. Soon, name and fame of Ghantakarna spreads all around the kingdom and all the thieves, dacoits and criminals start hiring him to take over their punishments.
Kinu Kaharer Thetar is a vastly discussed play of Monoj Mitra. Many groups in Bangladesh have staged the play before, audience also have taken it with pleasure. Monoj Mitra's plays are always unique for his story and dialogue manners. He brings us forth to the hardcore truth through humor.
This play satires the political leadership, the administration and judicial system of this country. The corrupt practice by the British rulers of that time also comes as an object of satire.
