Canal occupied in Jaintapur

Allegations from local sources in Jaintapur upazila of Sylhet district show that land-grabbers have illegally occupied lakes and canals. Such unauthorized occupation of water bodies has generated sufferings for local people reportedly. Around six hundred families living in Jaintapur close to those canals cannot avail daily essential water for this reason.
It has been complained by local inhabitants that Gous Uddin, his son Mahim Ahmed and Rahim Ahmed have built up unlawful dams over the lakes which have flowed down from Meghalaya state of India.

Residents of Jaintapur submitted written complaints to the local administrative units but reportedly no remedial actions have been yet taken. However, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mourin Karim has said that authorities concerned have been instructed to investigate the allegations. On the other hand, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Muntasir Hasan Palash has informed media that required measures would be soon initiated to release the canals from illegal encroachments.
