Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed hope on Sunday that Bangladesh would become a middle income country very soon. She said, "We will live in the world holding our heads high". Sheikh Hasina made these remarks on Sunday while handing over gold medals to 265 meritorious students at a program in Prime Minister's Office as chief guest.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "We have been laying greater emphasis on education following the footprints of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The world is changing fast. That's why we need to make education befitting for the current era."
Sheikh Hasina also talked about the contributions made by the present government for the development of education sector. Moreover, she referred to the initiatives which were taken up by Bangabandhu for spreading education throughout the country.
Sheikh Hasina told, "We are making wholehearted efforts for advancing the country by strengthening our people with appropriate education. We have also allotted funds regularly for boosting research works on different academic tracks."
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina further said, "At present literacy rate is 73% in the country as a result of effective measures by the present government. Our aim is to make everyone educated so that not a single illiterate person is found in Bangladesh. We have made primary and secondary education free for people. Scholarships and stipends are being provided to deserving students too."
The government has raised the number of public universities in the country, Sheikh Hasina said during the program. Medical universities have been established as well, she added. The government has facilitated the enhancement of education countrywide by building up universities in all districts through public or private endeavors, Sheikh Hasina remarked.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that she is very happy to see increasing number of girls obtaining higher education in the country. She called upon all students to concentrate on their studies profoundly for their own betterment as well as for the nation's prosperity.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina distributed gold medals to 265 outstanding students. The program was presided over by University Grants Commission's (UGC) Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid and Education Secretary Sohrab Hossain attended the occasion as special guests. The program's welcome speech was conferred by UGC member Professor Dr. Dil Afroza Begum.
According to UGC, 124 students from the year 2015 and 141 from 2016 received Prime Minister's Gold Medals this year.
