Ekram murder: 39 to die, Minar acquitted
A court in Feni has awarded the death penalty to 39 people in the murder of Phulgazi Upazila Council Chairman Ekramul Haque.

The district and sessions judge’s court acquitted 16 others, including local BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar.

On May 20, 2014, the local Awami League leader was killed in a daylight attack when his convoy was waylaid in the Feni district town.

Armed assailants blocked his car, opened fire on the vehicle and set it ablaze with the chairman trapped inside.
Ekramul’s brother Rezaul Hoque Jasim started the case against Minar and 30 to 35 unidentified people.

Police pressed charges against 56 people in August the same year. The court indicted them in March 2016 and heard arguments until Jan 28 this year.

On Feb 13, the court scheduled Tuesday for delivering the verdict.
