Prachyanat, one of the most popular theatre troupes is going to stage its acclaimed play Kinu Kaharer Thetar at the National Theater Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy today at 7pm. The popular political satire will be staged as a part of the ongoing drama festival to celebrate the 38th founding anniversary of another popular theater troupe, Padatik. It is going to be their 50th show.
The production begins with a crucial truth, the power misuse by the highest order of ruling. Written by Manaj Mitra and directed Kazi Toufiqul Islam Emon, Kinu Kaharer Thetar revolves around an imaginary kingdom, Putna, which is ruled by an autocratic king. When the prime minister of the kingdom molests a woman, the king falls into serious trouble. The governor general says, 'If it is not settled by law, the throne will be seized'.
The king faces a dilemma here as the minister of state is his best friend, so how can he submit him to have 14 slams of whip? He advises the minister to find out someone who will come to the court and state that he is the actual one to do the bad thing, not the minister, so that the punishment will be delivered to him.
So, a lazy man, namely Ghantakarna becomes the 'criminal' and in return his wife Jagadambha takes four bags of money from the king. Soon, name and fame of Ghantakarna spreads all around the kingdom and all the thieves, dacoits and criminals start hiring him to take over their punishments.
This play satires the political leadership, the administration and judicial system of this country. The corrupt practice by the British rulers of that time also comes as an object of satire.
