Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu has urged women journalists to boycott BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia terming her a women assaulter and friend of razakars (collaborators)."It is the duty of women journalists to boycott Khaleda Zia and her razakar friends. Hope, you will perform this duty," he said. Inu said this while speaking at the 16th founding anniversary of the 'Nari Sangbadik Kendro' at the Jatiya Press Club yesterday.
Calling upon women journalists to boost professional skill, the minister said, "It is necessary to remove gender discrimination from the country. Otherwise, razakars, war criminals, fundamentalist forces and militants obstruct you in every step of life and they will torture you when they get a chance."
He referred to the glorious role of women in the Liberation War and said they had to fight three battles: one of liberating the country, another of saving their lives and the third one, of protecting their honor. Referring to the many forms of harassment women face, every day, in a patriarchal society he said that women must stand up to the challenges and face them head-on.
He said the struggle for women's empowerment must continue and women must attain their position with their merit and not through only physical beauty.Inu criticized advertising agencies for commoditizing women because they display women more than the products.
He also said that the government through the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) would extend cooperation in this regard.President of "Nari Sangbadik Kendro" Nasimun Ara Haque Minu chaired the program while National Press Club president Shafiqur Rahman, Nari Sangbadik Kendro general secretary Parvin Sultana Jhuma and senior journalist Akter Jahan Banu spoke among others.
