The authorities of both the city corporations in Dhaka metropolis have decided to improve the facilities and conditions of 36 parks and play grounds to offer modern facilities to the city dwellers. The decision was taken at the separate meetings of the city corporations recently.
As per regulations of the Dhaka City Corporation in 1995, at least 20 per cent space of both the city corporation areas should be open for public consumption in all respects. But practically five per cent in the old Dhaka city and 12 per cent in the new Dhaka city space are kept open, showing the thumb to the laws of the city corporation for last 22 years.
Mohammad Osman Gani, Panel Mayor of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Md Sayeed Khokon, Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), in a joint meeting decided to offer modern amenities and facilities to the city dwellers within the current year.
To meet the urgent demands of the city dwellers, they took decision to improve and modernize 36 parks and playground cum parks with modern facilities such as gymnasiums, libraries, community centers and other facilities.
Mohammad Osman Gani, panel Mayor of DNCC, in the meantime, laid the foundation stone at the Play ground cum Park at Tajmohal Road in the city on February 27 to offer all sorts of modern facilities to the city dwellers. A project of Taka one crore 43 lakh and 29 thousand was taken for this purpose, sources in the DNCC told The Asian Age. The project activities will be completed by September this year.
Another project involving taka three crore 67 lakh and 33 thousand taka was for the modernization of Nurjahan Road's Sonali Park cum playground, the sources said adding that the play ground of Zakir Hossain Road was being repaired for public use.
The Nawabganj Shishu Park cum Community Centre construction work is going on; the sources said adding that there are seven community centers at the locality namely Shaheed Community Centre, Azimpur Mini Community Centre, Hazaribagh Community Centre, Dhaka Convention Centre, Matedore Convention Centre, Rahmat Ullah School Community Centre and Aamligola Community Centre. The local people told The Asian age that there is no need of another community centre at the locality as there are seven community centres at the door steps of the locality.
Abu Naser Khan, Chairman of Paribesh Bachao called for maintaining all the laws relating to the environment in restructuring the city parks and play grounds immediately. He stressed the need of maintaining open spaces as per law to balancing the ecology. He is also in favor of RAJUK's building code and its Master Plan for a living city of the 21st century.
Most of the open spaces are being occupied by the parks, water pump stations, community centers and commissioner's offices in the city, an official of RAJUK said. The parks at Nawabganj, Jattrabari Crossing, Nayatola Children Park, Lalmatia Park, Salimullah Park are the best examples of being grabbed by the authorities concerned.
