Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced yesterday amid a row over the issue that the quota system in government jobs for freedom fighters, their children and grandchildren would continue.
"We must have a spe Sheikh Hasina said no one should forget the people of the country got their long-cherished independence for the sacrifice of freedom fighters."We've to give their due honour, we introduced the quota system so that their children and grandchildren could get job."
But if anyone is not found to fill the quota, then the system will be relaxed to fill those with other brilliant students, the premier said, adding "If the freedom fighters had not sacrificed for the independence then there would have been no job for the people of this land."
A section of students and job-seekers are agitating seeking reforms to the quota system in government jobs. Hasina was speaking at ruling Awami League rally in Patenga area with Chittagong South Awami League president Moslem Uddin Ahmed in the chair, the rally was also addressed by AL general secretary Obaidul Kader, AL presidium member and Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, AL Publicity Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud, MP, State Minister for Land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, Nurul Alam Chowdhury, Chittagong City Awami League acting president Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury, Local MP Shamshul Huq Chowdhury and Chittagong City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin.
Earlier, the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stones of 41 development projects. She also went to BNS Issa Khan Parade Ground and awarded the National Standard to BN Dockyard and later inaugurated Bangabandhu Complex at Bangladesh Naval Academy.
The Chittagong South Awami League organised the rally at the place where Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered his speech in 1969, 1970 and 1973, while Jawaharlal Nehru in 1943.
Pointing to the Zia Orphanage Trust Graft case, the Prime Minister said BNP chief Khaleda Zia and her two sons for not obeying the directives of the Holy Quran and misappropriating the money of orphans.
Sheikh Hasina mentioned that the case in connection with the embezzlement of the money of Zia Orphanage was not lodged by Awami League but by the caretaker government.
"The top brass of the caretaker government were all the favourite personalities of Khaleda Zia. Moin Uddin, Iazuddin and Fakhruddin. They filed the case.," Hasina said adding that the Anti-Corruption Commission lodged the case and court gave the verdict.
