Samsung mobile phone sets with the tag 'assembled in Bangladesh' will be available in the local market before the Eid-ul-Fitr in late June.
Fair Electronics Limited (FEL) has set up a new plant making cent percent investment building partnership with the Korean mobile phone giant Samsung to assemble and manufacture a wide range of 4G smartphones for Bangladesh.
The FEL, a wing of Fair Group, today made the announcement of the inauguration of a new manufacturing plant in Narshingdi district to produce smartphones for Samsung Electronics in Bangladesh.
"With Samsung's technology and knowledge, we will make sure Samsung's globally standardized products will be brought in for customers in Bangladesh at an affordable price," Fair Group Chairman Ruhul Alam Al Mahbub said at a press conference in a city.
The 58,000 sq ft state-of-the-art plant will generate over 500 new jobs and many more indirect jobs, bringing in affordable smartphones to consumers and encourage more investments in Bangladesh.
Replying to a query, Chief Marketing Officer of Fair Group Mohammed Mesbah Uddin said they have already started the assembling of Samsung mobile phone sets at their new plant in three lines and those are being scanned through the stringent quality control (QC) process.
"We are optimistic to hit the market with 'assembled in Bangladesh' tag Samsung mobile phones before the Eid-Ul-Fite," he added.
About the QC process, he stated that Samsung has three layers of stringent quality control process with 25 testing equipments, and the manufacturing facility in Bangladesh will follow the quality assurance processes and standards in line with those followed by the global facilities of Samsung.
This manufacturing plant has been installed by the FEL in line with the policies of the government to help increasing localization, create more jobs and also a robust technology workforce in the country.
Samsung will be the first global handset company to set up a manufacturing plant in Bangladesh.
When asked on the pricing of the smartphones, Fair Group Chairman said they will try to set reasonable and affordable prices. "We will try to return back the duty benefit which the government has given to us for manufacturing the mobile phone." In October last year, a local mobile phone brand inaugurated its factory in Gazipur to manufacture handsets locally while another two are ready to do the same.
Managing Director of Samsung Electronics Bangladesh Seungwon Youn said, "As a part of our commitment to provide genuine and world-class Samsung products to our valued customers in Bangladesh, we are delighted to announce the new mobile manufacturing plant in Bangladesh with our partners, Fair Electronics Limited."
"We are sure the range of Samsung 4G smartphones will help the country achieve its digitalization goals as we move forward," he added.
As per the calculation of telecom regulator, over 3 crore mobile phones are being imported annually in Bangladesh.
