A nor'wester swept over different parts of the country including the capital yesterday evening, lashed homesteads, crops and trees. The storm along with heavy rains and hails started at around 6:15pm and continued it until 6:35pm.
Met office said that at least 83 kilometers speed of wind was recorded during the storm. Due to the onslaught of the nor'wester, many trees and electric poles were uprooted, while tins of many houses flew. Electric transformers of different places got exploded disrupting power connections.
The storm also damaged crops and vegetables of many areas in the country. But, the estimate of damage or loses could not be known instantly. According to the city dwellers, normal movement of the people was hampered due to the sudden onslaught of nor'wester.
Abdul Halim, a rickshaw puller in the city said that his rickshaw along with two passengers turned turtle on the road while it was hit by the gusty wind. Panic stricken people took shelter at different places leaving the streets in fear of injury.
Many witnesses said: "Experience of such lashing by the nor'wester was a rare incident for the city dwellers." Met office sources said: "The nor'wester swept over different parts of Chattagram, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Rajshahi and Rangpur along with rains and hails.
Agriculture Extension Department sources said: "Mangoes of many trees in several areas especially Rajshahi and Chapainawbganj dropped due to the storm."On the other hand, in Habiganj, three persons including a child were killed due to the thunderstorm.
