Avengers: Infinity War has been loosely 10 years in the making. The first Avengers introduced an artifact known as the tesseract, which was sought after by Loki. It turned out to be an infinity stone and there are six of them.
The Titan, Thanos, wants all six infinity stones and will stop at nothing to get them. It is up to Tony Stark (Iron Man), Steve Rogers (Captain America), Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), James Rhodes (War Machine), Sam Wilson (Falcon), T'Challa (Black Panther), Okoye, Bruce Banner (The Hulk), Thor, Vision, Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch), Dr Strange, Wong, Peter Parker (Spider Man) and the Guardians of the Galaxy to stop Thanos. In this Avengers film, almost every hero present till now in the Marvel Cinematic universe come to protect the universe. The Avengers have assembled.
Cinematically the movie's visuals are crisp and transition well especially in 3D. The mythos of the infinity stones took almost all Marvel films till now to build and it is still explained a bit for the audience to understand. There is the staple Marvel humor that helps make the pacing of the movie feel organic and natural.
Despite being 2 hours and 40 minutes long the film does not at all feel boring. There are great action sequences that are intersected by good dialogues and interactions.
The film covers different arcs with different heroes who all try to stop Thanos with their own plans. The approach felt realistic as different minds may think differently. This allowed the audience to understand the world of Marvel better both on planet Earth and beyond.
There are different perspectives involved and all of them are given significance and credibility. The stakes are high in this movie and no fight or battle is not without its own risks. The fight sequences are all tailored to each individual's forte and they are up to the level we know them from their own previous films.
There are many aspects of the movie that felt integral to character development and shows how characters have developed till now. Bruce Banner has to understand a world he has been far away from and his absence has had some effects.
Tony Stark meets a rival in Dr. Steven Strange. In their own independent movies, one can remember the once flamboyant and arrogant Tony Stark and he is meeting the equally ingenious and arrogant former neurosurgeon, Dr. Steven Strange. They are both stubborn but they ultimately want the greater good.
It is a relief to know that new Avengers won't easily get along with old ones even if the world is in danger. The clash of personalities is inevitable. At times, some of the characters act as bewildered bystanders and there is humor in those moments too.
The roles of the other Avengers are also fashioned along this path. Some have moved on and others are still tied to the past. Vision is still struggling to understand himself and Wanda Maximoff is also transitioning between how she is perceived and how she wants to live. T'Challa is still the noble king, willing to take risks and make sacrifices. He is partnered with Steve Rogers, who also has the same attributes in his character. Black Widow and Falcon are always ready to fight and protect. Okoye is still the fierce and disciplined general.
The previous films have shown why they are so significant and how they are so important to this narrative. The previous movies have given the characters their essential growth to continue in this one. Thor has developed a lot in this movie. He has grown from being a stubborn, selfish fighter to a more empowered warrior. He is more expressive of what he thinks and feels, and generally is also more calculative of his actions.
As usual his amicable nature makes him easily able to team up with the least likely of characters. Gamora is more hell-bent in killing Thanos and she explains this to Peter Quill. Gamora's complicated and strained relationship with her adoptive father serves as a potent material in the film. It explains a lot about Gamora and ultimately about Thanos.
The movie focuses a lot on Thanos and the aspects of his personality that make him a credible villain. Thanos lacks the delusions of grandeur of Loki and the implacable madness of Ultron. Rather he is frightening and imposing because ultimately Thanos believes he is kind and compassionate.
To him, the universe by design is cruel and limited and only he has the will to balance it and sustain it. Thanos is not without logic but he is sociopathic and cold. He truly believes might is right when it is his might and his logic. He seems to have the impregnable belief that his ruthlessness is cruelty that is required for the final kindness. However, he is pretty indifferent to the sufferings of others and that makes viewers question him.
His views are challenged on multiple layers by different Avengers. Thus the movie is not only a clash of muscles but also a clash for survival and philosophies. This film is extremely well made. Marvel took many risks with this cast and crew. Some of the outcomes won't be liked by some fans but this fan certainly liked them. It made sense in the overall scheme of things.
The movie does enough fanservice but not to misbalance its own narrative interests. Infinity War may be a culmination of 10 years in the making but after it comes other movies and the Marvel Cinematic Universe has to sustain and make a background for those movies as well.
Conclusively, this is a recommended movie to watch for friends, families and the fans.
