Detectives have arrested the alleged mastermind of the killings of four young men, who were found slaughtered in a paddy field at Baladighi village in Shibganj uapzila on May 7, from Kalai upazila of Joypurhat district.
The arrestee is Zahid alias Tera Zahid, son of Abdus Samad of Kathgara Naona in Shibganj upazila. He was also accused in dozen of murder cases, police said.
A team of district Detective Branch of police, led by its inspector Aslam Ali, conducted a drive at Punat of Kalai and arrested Zahid around 12 am on Wednesday.
A knife used in the murders was also recovered from his possession.
With this, four of the nine people who directly took part in the murders have been arrested, police said.
Earlier on May 14, police arrested three killers -- Jewel Sheikh, 25, son of Rafiqul Sheikh of Chawkpara village in Shibganj upazila, Abul Kalam Azad, 48, son of Abdus Samad of Talukdarpara of Chandanpur, and Rubel Miah, son of Abu Bakar of Daboir village.
Meanwhile, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members arrested two more suspects over the murders.
They are M Abu Bakkar Pramanik, 50, son of Rostam Ali of Badladighi village, and M Zahidul Islam alias Tera, 48, son of late Abdus Sattar of Kathpara. They were later handed over to Shibganj Police Station.
On May 7, four young men Zakaria Islam, 32, son of Jahurul Islam of Kathgara village in Shibganj, Shabrul Islam, 35, son of Asir Uddin of Kathgara Chawkpara, and Helal Uddin, 36, son of Azahar Ali of Punot village in Kalai upazila of Joypurhat and Khabir -- were found slaughtered in a paddy field of Baladighi village in Shibganj upazila.
They were murdered over the share of money got from selling drugs, claimed police.
